さよぎぬ, Sayoginu, was a high ranking courtesan of the Edo Period, and her celebrity was immortalized by Isoda Koryūsai around 1776 in the famous "Sayoginu of the Yotsumeya Brothel," from the series "Models for Fashion: New Year Designs as Fresh as Young Leaves." We know that Yotsumeya Brothel was a real place, but little about the courtesans who served there and in the Pleasure Quarters of the Edo Period. They were likely women of poor backgrounds, possibly indentured. Her name is probably professional, meaning "Night Clothes." (ED)
