山桜, Yama-zakura, means "Mountain of Cherry Blossoms." Sakura becomes zakura through the standard rendaku consonant voicing change. It is a seed strain, not properly a cultivar, but present in the trade. The tree is named after the eponymous estate in the Catskills, NY, which was built all of Cherry wood from the mountain by Japanese craftsmen, using only traditional techniques. The mountain is indeed wonderful to see during the Cherry blossoming season. 山桜 directly means Prunus jamasakura, the wild cherry of Japan. (ED)
