袖の団, Sode-no-uchi, "Inside the Sleeves" may refer to the formalty of this plant's growing habit. (ED)

Sode-no-uchi is a small growing Acer tenuifolium [DSN: sieboldianum]. It seems likely this is the same maple that Yano lists, from a 1688 source, as A. tenuifolium (formerly A. shirasawanum ssp tenuifolium). Mature height is around 10' under favorable conditions. Spring foliage is a light green with yellow and red highlights. Autumn color is an excellent yellow orange and red. It forms an open airy plant unlike the stiff branching of many of the A. sieboldianum. (DSN, as Sode no uchi)
