霊山, Ryōzen, means "Sacred Mountain." It is a curious case of spelling, because in the specifically Buddhist context, the on'yomi (Sino-Japanese) reading of 山 may be "sen" instead of the usual "san" (zan with rendaku). ("yama" is the native kun'yomi reading). This epithet probably refers to Mount Ryōzen in Date, Fukushima, where a Tendai temple was founded in 859 CE. (ED)
