墨枝垂, Sumi-shidare, means "Weeping Black Ink." 墨枝 refers to India Ink, or Black Ink. The cultivar comes from Saitama Prefecture, and even though its synonym 'Kō-i' was published both before and after, this name is used everywhere. (There is also a distinct maple named Koi). (ED)
This weeping dissectum retains leaves of a deep red-brown from Spring and throught the Summer. Fall color is a deep red. (ED)
