大和青柳, Yamato-aoyagi, means "Japan Aoyagi", differentiating this version of the cultivar from those sold elsewhere (although they are theoretically of Japanese origin.) Aoyagi means "Green Willow", it is an indivisible compound noun. Yamato (大和) is the classical name for Japan, connecting to the central Yamato Province and meaning "Great Harmony."
