Acer
palmatum
ICNCP Name: 'Yuri hime'
Formerly 'Yuri hime'
The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) establishes the rules and regulations for proper naming of plants. When different, the cultivar database displays the correct(ed) ICNCP name, rather than its previous cultivar name.
Japanese Maple Classification:
Palmatum Group
Hardiness Zone (for guidance only):
5 to 9
We do not know the origin of Yuri hime, so it is left unhyphenated for now. Possible meanings are 揺姫, Yuri-hime means "Trembling Princess", evoking the small leaves trembling in the wind, or 百合姫, Yuri-hime, means "Lily Princess", evoking the beauty of the flower. These are purely kun' (native Japanese) readings, so they would be easy enough for a non-Japanese to generate from a dictionary. (ED)
Yuri hime is one of the smallest of the palmatum varieties. The short annual growth and close bud spacing give the plant the appearance of a covering of feathers. While Yuri hime is not recommended for areas of heavy snow load, it is otherwise surprisingly hardy. (DSN)
